A brief summary of some popular high-definition resolutions.

  • SD (Standard Definition or sometimes called Standard HD): 1280 x 720px ( 16:9 aspect ratio or 1.77:1 )
  • 2K HD: 1920 x 1080px; 16:9 aspect ratio or 1.77:1
  • 4K UHD: 3840 x 2160px, 1.77:1 aspect ratio; 4K UHD is a consumer 4K definition, also abbreviated as just UHD or 4k
    GoPro 10 offers next to 4K UHD also a 4:3 format: 4000x3000px (i.e. classic 4:3 aspect ratio)
  • 4K: 4096 x 2160px, 1.9:1 aspect ratio (256:135); also known as 4K DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative); it’s twice 2K;
    Under the 4K DCI specification other cropped versions exist:
    3996 x 2160px; 1.85:1 aspect ratio
    4096 x 1716px; 2.39:1 aspect ratio, also known as CinemaScope cropping for a more cinematic look
  • 5K: 5120 x 2880px
    GoPro 10 for example has its own specs and offers:
    5.3K (5312 x 2988px; 16:9 aspect ratio or 1.77:1)
    5K 4:3 format (5120 x 3840px; 4:3 aspect ratio)
  • 6K: 6144 x 3160px (1.94:1 aspect ratio)
  • 8K: 7680 x 4320px (16:9 aspect ratio or 1.77:1)
